Newbies Surprise In Debut

Micah Pearson’s jeans gave manager Ian Herbert some pause — at first.

Washington D.C. | When Ryan Derousseau arrived at the Silver Spring metro station to get his ride from Micah Pearson, he was caught a little off-guard.

Pearson was there, but not exactly softball-ready. He was wearing a pair of blue jeans and a T-shirt, an outfit similar to the one he wears to work every day. He told Derousseau that he was on his way to the mall to pick up shorts, but the mall was closed, and Pearson ended up arriving at the field Saturday morning in non-athletic clothing.

But his nontraditional uniform gave little indication as to the way he would play. Pearson, who started the game on the bench, tripled in his first at-bat, making a dramatic, if not graceful slide into third after hustling around the bases. In the field, Pearson made a handful of acrobatic plays at third base, even though he had to borrow a glove in order to play.

“I have to admit, when I saw Micah show up in what is essentially a suit for him — I’ve seen him in the office — I did not expect him to blast a triple to left field,” manager Ian Herbert said. “I told him that after the game.”

Pearson wasn’t the only newbie who made an impact in Saturday’s doubleheader. Derousseau may have earned himself a permanent spot at third base with a strong, error-proof day and was 4-for-6 in his debut.

“I hadn’t swung a bat since junior high,” said Derousseau, who had his mom mail him two old gloves the week before the season started. “I was nervous out there. But, man, was it fun.”

Derousseau is part of the WhoRunsGov.com contingent, which merged with Express during the offseason. His office-mate, Beth Marlowe, turned some heads batting second. She had three singles on the day.

I feel it should be noted that, had Micah appeared in his standard office uniform, his attire would have included a tie.

I feel it should be noted that had Micah’s standard office uniform including a tie, is a relatively new trend. Ian is right on, based on when he was last working across the river.
