Until March 2010, the only experience Sarah had laying hands on a baseball bat was while moving her boyfriend’s out of its corner to be able to vacuum underneath it. Born and raised in the small alpine nation of Austria, Sarah’s exposure to both team sports and ball games had been minimal. Though dodgeball was one of her favorites in elementary PE class and she once attended summer tennis camp, she much preferred skiing down treacherous mountains to participating in organized team sports.

That all changed once the combination of unseasonably warm D.C. spring weather and a park a baseball’s throw from their home gave her boyfriend the idea to initiate a series of (i.e., three) sessions of playing catch to teach Sarah “the fundamentals of the game” he had been passionately in love with since childhood. To her utter surprise, a little bit of coaching went a (relatively) long way, and Sarah discovered her hidden talent for throwing and catching a ball with sufficiently respectable form. A brief batting session on a remote patch of grass on the Tregaron estate, in which Sarah successfully hit the very first ball ever pitched to her, sealed the deal—she would join the 20-Minutemen as catcher for their 2010 season.

When she isn’t wielding her stylish black Nike catcher’s glove that so nicely coordinates with her yoga pants/softball shorts, Sarah spends a good amount of her free time thinking about and writing her dissertation. She does not work for Express, but will not disclose her place of employment for fear of retaliation from the CSN.
