Andrea (Gaynor) Bonior has had a lifelong love of baseball, born out of thousands of hours watching her brothers play and having the otherwise thankless job of being an Orioles fan post-1983. (She has since switched allegiance to the Nats, but don’t ask her to choose should they ever face off in the World Series.) She went on to be business manager of Yale’s varsity baseball team, but thankfully the closest she came to seeing playing time was using the radar gun, cursing like a sailor and frequently mooching sunflower seeds and gum from the guys.
Despite her love for and familiarity with the game, the clinical psychologist’s softball skills are best characterized as “nontraditional.” (This is probably due to the fact that her actual hands-on experience was long doomed by a mortal fear of finger injury, the troubling side effect of being a classically trained pianist and violinist).
She specializes in playing while pregnant, running the bases with sunglasses intact on top of her head, and discretely finding wooded areas in which to suffer from morning sickness and/or change babies’ diapers. She also excels at simultaneously serving as catcher while reminding her preschooler son that he is not on deck, so he SHOULD NOT BE APPROACHING THE FIELD!!!, and reassuring her toddler daughter that she will be there any minute.
Finally, Dr. Bonior is charged with providing emergency psychotherapy and crisis counseling to traumatized knees, ankles, hamstrings and Achilles tendons. Despite these unique accomplishments, her crowning softball achievement, bar none, has been to serve as the means for her spouse, the behemoth Andy Bonior, to play for the Minutemen.
