Clinton first learned the game of baseball as 10-year-old at DuFour Athletic Center on the campus of Catholic University. His introduction to the game came at a winter camp, where the game was played on gym floors, and hitting drills were conducted in basement batting cages and shabby racquetball courts. Needless to say, he loved it, so by the time the weather warmed up, the normally crappy digs of Duke Ellington Field in Georgetown seemed like paradise for practice.
After many weekends spent at Turtle Park, Jelleff Boys & Girls Club, and Guy Mason field, he was officially hooked on the national pastime. He even played in Camden Yards once with D.C.’s RBI team. Unfortunately he’d have to wait another decade before he got to see a team with the name Washington on their jerseys play ball. And considering they opened play at RFK Stadium where he grew up watching the Redskins pound opponents, it was a legit tear-jerking moment for him. His unbridled passion for the game still holds true today.
As shortstop of the Minutemen, Yates likes to consider himself one of the team’s vocal leaders. He set a MMSL record with 10 double plays in 2008. Widely considered the best baserunner in MMSL, Yates has bulked up for Express’ third softball season, and is looking to have a breakout year as the team’s leadoff hitter. After an off-season full of roster moves, he expects the team to hover around the .500 mark.
He enjoys long drives into D.C. from Montgomery County on hot Saturday afternoons with no shirt on.
