Darren grew up in the hills of Lisbon (that would be Connecticut, not Portugal), and learned to play baseball in the sandlots of the Taftville Little League. Darren was suited more to the bench than to the field, however. As a second baseman he converted a sensational zero double plays out of seventeen. As a batter he was more suited to tee-ball than to Little League. On several occasions Darren backed into pitches that were actually behind him just so he’d be able to say he got on base. Fortunately, Darren can throw the ball farther than Katie Aberbach can.
When Darren saw his future in baseball fade, he retired, soon to take up the spring sport lacrosse. Although he won’t have a stick to catch baseballs while fielding, he is looking forward to breaking in another glove. Darren’s other notable athletic achievements include dunking (on an 8′ hoop), bowling a 300 (cumulatively over four games) and shooting multiple holes-in-one on the Pirate’s Cove mini-golf course in Hyannis, Mass.
