Ian was born in Washington D.C. and learned the game of baseball on the streets of D.C. Ian was seemingly groomed for softball. A star pitcher when he was 10, he has failed to add any velocity to his fastball over the last 15-plus years. But he can still get the ball across the plate and work the umps as well as anyone.
During a little league game at Taft Junior High School in 7th grade, Ian was vaguely paying attention to the game when a pickup basketball game fight spilled out onto the baseball diamond. He watched as the fight’s clear loser was kicked and beaten with sticks. He did not join in the brawl then, but he has since made a point of bringing a fighting mentality to the field for every game.
An assistant manager for most of the first two seasons of Express softball, Ian was suddenly promoted to interim manager midseason in 2008 after Chris Mincher’s unexpected retirement. He made some much-talked-about lineup modifications that led to 46 runs in the team’s final four games. His play also improved noticeably during season No. 2. One of Express’ worst hitters, statistically, in the inaugural season, Ian batted .600 with three home runs and 12 RBI in 2008.
During the offseason, Ian left Express for another Post publication Whorunsgov.com, and he recruited three of his five colleagues to play with the Minutemen this season. He honed his coaching skills by leading a Special Olympics basketball team to a gold medal, and returns to the bench this year with the “interim” removed from his titled and a multi-year contract in place (terms were undisclosed).
