Katie excelled as a third basewoman while in elementary school gym classes in Norwich, Conn. She decided to retire while she was at the top of her game, and spent the following years pursuing cross country (a regional Junior Olympian in 1995 and 1996), tennis (an annual top seed in the Aberbach family summer championships since 1997) and lacrosse (alternating between the positions of attack and defense wing in high school and college). In all of these endeavors, she became known for her speed and agility, as well as her exemplary bench-warming and cheering skills.
Returning to the softball field in 2008, Katie initially confused a bat with a lacrosse stick (it had been a long, restful retirement from the sport, both mentally and physically), but quickly progressed to contributing a few hits and runs in key Minutemen games. In the off-season, Katie has focused on improving her strength through a series of daily bench presses and squats with 95-lb. weights. She also completed her first marathon and second half marathon in record times. She hopes this training will prepare her to surpass her elementary school-level of talent in the 2009 season.
