Not blessed with the gifts of speed or hands, Matt Swenson has thrived off his incredible punctuality for most of his life. During the first two Minutemen seasons, there were two things certain about Express softball: mud at Wheaton Forest and Matt Swenson. Though he had no car, meaning he had to bum rides every week, he never missed a game.
Swenson honed his softball skills beginning in elementary school, where he never failed to miss a naptime. In junior high, he attended ever school dance, though, as with softball, the only skill he brought to the dance was his punctuality. At Express, Swenson has never missed a free bagel day or a Cosi coupon.
But Express’ world is about to be turned upside down. Swenson made it clear before the 2009 season that he would miss games this season. And he backed that up by missing the first practice at the batting cages. He will also be relinquishing his role as beat reporter for 20minutemen.org. Players and coaches are unsure what Swenson will contribute this season (other than, of course, a batting average that is fifth-best on the team).
