The unicorn Ukukudakar fell in love with softball after the sorceress Chronacastrata sent to him a vision of the green Wood of Wheaton many ages into the misty future that few can hope to see.
After this, Ukukudakar could know no peace. He pined for the game of sticks and balls. He spurned the Faerie Folks’ invitations to the spring solstice. He grew distant from his consort, the nymph Atlinaia. He fathered few young, and those born were weak and hornless.
At last, his grandsire said, “My scion, if this desire is the dearest to you in the world, than you must seek it by whatever means necessary, or you will wish yourself unto death.”
So Ukukudakar returned to Chronacastrata, who clad him in a human body and and cast him into the world of New Earth, in the year known here as 2009. She gave him the guise of Nathan Martin.
But the exchange was dear—his team must win six games in order to win back his soul. Should he lose, the Dark Lord would take him into the underworld beneath the mudflats of the Wheaton wood.
